What does it mean to meditate?

I have noticed an interesting distinction across religious traditions in terms of what meditation tools are used and I would be interested in studying these distinctions further. It seems to me that Buddhist meditation techniques teach people to be in the present moment by letting go of one's attachment to thinking or rather to filling the mind. Yogic traditions seem to emphasize focusing the mind on one point, bringing the present mind to this one point whenever the mind notices itself. Christian traditions seem to emphasize focusing the mind on the Word of God - filling the mind with God rather than with one's own thoughts and expressions.

What is common across these traditions is the practice of liberating one's mind from its own shackles of thought - thoughts related to one's ego, ambitions, worries and so on.
